It might sound odd for strawberries to be in season in winter for those in the US, but the height of strawberry season here in Japan is December-January. From my understanding, we grow a cold-weather varietal here that isn't as hardy as other types but makes up for it in flavor and sweetness.
I'm not usually a big fruit-in-salad fan, but I was craving something light and bright the other night. So, after a rummage through my veggie drawer, I found a wilting bunch of watercress I'd plucked a few leaves from and a couple of stray strawberries that had fallen out of their carton.
