Cumin lamb (孜然羊肉 - Zi Ran Yang Rou - literally "cumin lamb") is a fragrant dish from Xinjiang in northwest China. Smack dab in the center of Asia, the food of Xinjiang is an alluring blend of East and West Asia with ingredients like noodles and soy sauce paired with lamb and cumin.
This isn't a traditional cumin lamb, but when I'm cooking for my family, I care less about authenticity and more about a quick, easy meal that will please everyone at our table. The original version is seasoned with soy sauce, but using some oyster sauce adds umami and a mild sweetness that makes this something my daughter can get into. There are also no bell peppers in the original either, but adding colorful veggies turns this into a one-pan entre that only needs a plate of rice or noodles to turn it into a complete meal.
